Why Solar by Omar Uses These Specific Products

Most NJ solar installers will put whatever equipment their distributor pushes this week. Here’s exactly what we install, why we chose it, and what it means for your home.

Omar Jackson — Founder, Solar by Omar I came from Sunrun. I’ve seen what happens when installers prioritize margin over equipment quality. Every product we install is something I’d put on my own roof. Here’s why.

The equipment on your roof determines whether your solar system performs for 25 years or starts causing problems in year 8. The inverter brand determines how well your monitoring works. The battery brand determines whether your lights stay on when the grid goes down. These decisions matter — and most homeowners never ask about them.

Our Technology Partners

Why We Default to Enphase IQ8 Microinverters

The inverter is the most important piece of equipment in your solar system — and it’s the one most installers treat as an afterthought. An inverter converts DC power from your panels into AC power your home can use. The technology you choose here has major implications for performance, monitoring, and longevity.

Enphase IQ8 Microinverter

Module-level power electronics · 25-year warranty · Sunlight backup capable

Traditional string inverters connect all your panels to one central box. If one panel has shading, bird droppings, or a manufacturing defect, the entire string underperforms. Microinverters attach to each panel individually — so one underperforming panel has zero effect on the rest of your system.

For NJ homes specifically, this matters because most rooftops have at least some partial shading from trees, chimneys, or neighboring structures. Microinverters extract maximum production from every panel regardless of what’s happening to its neighbors.

The IQ8 also enables Enphase’s Sunlight Backup feature — which allows your home to run on solar power during a grid outage even without a battery. For NJ homeowners who want outage protection but aren’t ready for a full battery investment, this is a meaningful middle ground.

Why not a standard string inverter or SolarEdge?

String inverters are cheaper upfront and work fine on perfectly oriented, shade-free roofs. SolarEdge uses power optimizers at each panel which partially addresses the shading issue. Neither matches the per-panel independence, monitoring granularity, or warranty terms of Enphase microinverters. For most NJ residential rooftops — which have some shading and varying roof planes — Enphase consistently outperforms on production and delivers better long-term reliability data.

Tesla Powerwall 3 — Battery Backup for NJ Homes

New Jersey’s grid reliability has been a consistent issue — nor’easters, summer peak demand events, and aging infrastructure mean outages are a real risk, not a theoretical one. A battery backup system keeps your home powered when JCP&L, PSE&G, or ACE goes down.

Tesla Powerwall 3

13.5 kWh capacity · 11.5 kW continuous power · Whole-home backup · Built-in inverter

The Powerwall 3 is Tesla’s most capable home battery — and the first version to include an integrated solar inverter, which simplifies the installation and reduces equipment on your wall. It stores 13.5 kWh of usable energy per unit, enough to run a typical NJ home’s essential circuits for 12–18 hours during an outage.

For coastal NJ properties — Brick, Berkeley Township, Toms River — where nor’easters can knock out power for 24–48 hours, a Powerwall installation is one of the most practical home resilience upgrades available. Multiple units can be stacked for larger homes or longer backup duration.

GAF Energy Timberline Solar — For Aesthetics-First Homeowners

GAF Energy Timberline Solar

Solar shingles · Dual warranty — roof + solar · No racking required

Not every homeowner wants visible solar panels on their roof. For properties in communities with strict aesthetic standards — or homeowners who simply prefer a cleaner look — GAF Energy’s Timberline Solar shingles replace your existing roof while simultaneously generating solar power. No racking hardware, no visible mounting hardware, no panels sitting above the roofline.

GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. Their Timberline Solar product carries both a roofing warranty and a solar production warranty — one product, one warranty, one installation. This is particularly relevant for NJ homeowners whose roofs are approaching end-of-life and were planning to reroof anyway.

Span Smart Panel — Taking Control of Your Home’s Electricity

Span Smart Electrical Panel

Circuit-level monitoring · EV integration · Battery optimization · App control

A Span panel replaces your existing electrical panel with a smart system that gives you circuit-level visibility and control through a smartphone app. In a solar + battery system, Span allows you to configure exactly which circuits stay on during a grid outage — so your essentials (refrigerator, medical devices, lights, EV charger) are prioritized while high-draw items like electric dryers are automatically shed.

For NJ homeowners with electric vehicles, Span’s built-in EV integration means your car charges from solar surplus during the day and automatically pauses during grid outages — so you’re not draining your battery backup on EV charging when the grid is down. It’s the most intelligent energy management system available for residential installations in 2026.
